Now that the Super Bowl is over, let’s talk about the game that over 3 billion fans call “football” and the local gay outpost of the more popular sport in the world. Locally, the club has has participated in the Austin Men’s Soccer Association (AMSA) continuously since spring 2007, capturing the second place trophy in the AMSA’s Division 5 in Spring 2011. In 2013, the club expanded to two teams, both a competitive and recreational team. In Spring 2014, club is looking to add a co-ed team that will play in the Austin Social League.
Goldstars’ players have also participated in International Gay and Lesbian Football Association (IGLFA) summer competitions over the past few years; once as partners with Toronto in Washington, DC in 2009 and twice with the Twin Cities Jacks in Cologne, Germany in 2010 and Vancouver, British Columbia in 2011. The club is now looking forward to the 2014 Gay Games in Cleveland, Ohio later this summer.
For new players looking to sign up, the club is hosting a New Player Orientation (NPO) on Sunday, February 9, 2014 from 2-4 PM at Zilker Park. All skill levels are welcome, from the new-to-soccer players on the recreational team to the experienced players of the competitive team. If you can’t make the orientation, you can also attend one of the pre-season practices. For more information, you can contact the club through their Facebook Group.
The spring season starts on Sunday, March 2, 2014 and lasts approximately 8-10 weeks, depending on the final number of teams that sign up in the AMSA’s divisions. Games are played on Sundays as soccer fields around Austin that vary weekly, with practices scheduled in the evenings during the week. While the club does sometimes add players to the teams mid-season if needed, the best time to join is during the New Player Orientation or a similar practice during the preseason.
Player fees on the season range from $65-$75 per person per season; depending on the season and what AMSA is charging. The club also offers “Early Bird” discounts for club members who pay on time. Since inability to pay shouldn’t keep someone from playing, the club is willing to help set up payment plans with players dependent on their individual financial needs.
