A quick primer for those of you new to Splash and/or Austin’s queer scene. First, there are TWO Splash weekends in Austin: First Splash during Memorial Day Weekend and Last Splash during Labor Day Weekend. First Splash is when Austin gays kick off summer, while Last Splash is the unofficial close of summer.

[gdlr_box_icon icon=”fa-taxi” icon_color=”#d55949″ icon_position=”left” title=”‘No Refusal’ in Place for Labor Day Holiday” ]The Austin Police Department’s ‘No Refusal’ DWI initiative is in place daily from 3 PM to 5 AM through Monday, September 3, 2018. If you are pulled over and suspected of driving while impaired, officers will be able to apply for a search warrant to obtain blood from operators who refuse to provide a breath or blood sample.[/gdlr_box_icon]

Last Splash is technically just the party out on the lake at the gay section of Hippie Hollow on the Sunday of the holiday weekend. That’s when the bars come together and load up a couple of barges with booze and bartenders and deejays and head out to the cove. There are several events that pop-up around the lake event. Splash Days, for example, is a multi-day party during Last Splash Weekend. Austin Chill Weekend is a bear run organized by the Lone Star Bears that falls over Labor Day weekend. While these Splash-adjacent events tend to focus on a specific portion of the community, the actual Splash party at the lake is open to everyone … 18 and up, just because that’s the rule at Hippie Hollow.

The weather is looking nearly perfect for the weekend, and especially Sunday, but this is Texas after all and this could change, but we’ll keep you posted on any changes that may affect events.

[gdlr_heading tag=”h5″ font_weight=”bold” icon=”fa-calendar”]LAST SPLASH [/gdlr_heading]

Last Splash

This is the main event. This is what Splash is all about. Now, you have to use some imagination to visualize what it’s like when we have a full lake and there isn’t a rocky beach to camp out on. Back in the day we used to find a perch on the rocks or, if you got there late, back up in the trees.

If you haven’t heard, Hippie Hollow is a clothing optional park … actually the only clothing optional park in the state. It’s optional, so you don’t have to take your clothes off … in fact most don’t although, after a few drinks and baking under the sun, there are more nude people out later in the day. Remember, nudity is okay, lewd behavior isn’t and will get you ticketed or arrested.

There is no cost to go the Splash party at the lake, BUT there is a fee to get in to the park. It’s $15 per vehicle if you drive in or $8 per person if you walk or bike in. Cash or check only, no credit/debit cards. There is no fee if you come in off the lake on a boat. Please note that Hippie Hollow Park generally reaches capacity on holiday weekends. When capacity is reached the park is closed for the remainder of the day to all incoming traffic, including pedestrians. So don’t be surprised if you’re turned away at the gate when you show up late in the afternoon.

If you intend to get free drinks from the party barges, you will need to get a wristband. Wristbands are available from one of the sponsor bars/businesses on Saturday night. You will need to bring your ID and it will be put on you at the bar. No, you can’t grab a couple for your friends. Your wristband only gets you free drinks from the sponsored party barge. You do not need a wristband to go to the Splash party at the lake. Your wristbands do not get you in to the park for free. You still need to play the park entry fee if you drive or walk in.

Also, it’s a long hike from the parking lot to the gay section at Hippie Hollow … take this in mind if you plan to haul in a ton of crap. If you haul it in, you haul it out. Dispose of all trash properly in the appropriate containers. If you bring your own beverages, remember, NO GLASS containers. Tobacco is prohibited in all Travis County parks. Pets are not allowed at Hippie Hollow.

After Splash is really up to you … most will go home and (hopefully) shower and freshen up or nap before heading back out for a Sunday Funday on 4th Street. Locals should note that many bars will be treating Sunday night like a second Saturday so most will not have their regularly scheduled Sunday night shows.

[put_wpgm id=11]
[gdlr_space height=”10px”]

If you’re planning on driving out, try to head out early. Because of limited parking, once the lot hits capacity the park temporarily closes the park to new visitors until it clears out a bit. You are encouraged to carpool or riding out on a boat if possible. If you bring your own beverages, remember, NO GLASS containers. Also, it’s a long hike from the parking lot to the gay section at Hippie Hollow … take this in mind if you plan to be hauling in a ton of crap.

Austin Pride Week 2019

Published

on

While many celebrate pride during Pride Month in June, Austin has hosted its Pride events later in the summer since 2011. The Austin Gay & Lesbian Pride Foundation, the organizers of Austin PRIDE, announced in January that this year’s celebration will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2019,  and as in the past, you can expect  a week of events — both official and unofficial — leading up to the Austin PRIDE festival and parade.

In response to the recent mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, Austin Pride announced that it has stepped up security at this weekend’s Austin Pride 2019 Celebration during both the festival and parade:

Security Statement in behalf of Austin Pride:

The shootings from this weekend are nothing short of heartbreaking. The mass murders of our people is criminal and change and justice must occur quickly. Our Ohio and El Paso neighbors follow in a long legacy of terror within our own borders and we cannot continue in this manner. No other country experiences this. We must change the system that has created a climate of living in constant fear and the resulting despair of these increasingly common incidents.

Austin Pride is a 10 day celebration of people, individuality, and freedom. In light of this weekends’ mass shootings, we’d like to inform our attendees and volunteers that safety is always paramount. We a have heavy security presence through drones, plain-clothed and uniformed police, sheriff, and SWAT forces at our annual Pride Parade and heavy security at our festival, where weapons are strictly prohibited. This is the standard yearly, which comes as an infringement of rights to some, and an overwhelming presence of protection to others. This year we will be increasing measures as safety is paramount and in a climate of armed terror, we are cutting no corners.

To those who lost a loved one this weekend, we hold you deeply in our hearts and we will support action and change, we will march on the front lines with you. That’s what freedom and unity are and we cannot let terror win. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

We’ve put together our annual Austin Pride Planner to help you plan your week and get the most out of everything that is going on. This guide is an active document and will be updated regularly as new events are added to the calendar leading up to pride week. You are encouraged to bookmark this page and check back for updates.

This is an active post and is updated. It also features a curated list of events. For a complete list of upcoming events, check out our community calendar.

PRIDE vs. pride. Not all the events listed in this guide are ‘official’ Austin PRIDE events. Many ‘pride’ events have no connection to the Austin Gay & Lesbian Pride Foundation. Some are stand-alone events by allied businesses showing their support for the LGBTQ+ community and many are regular weekly/monthly events with a special pride theme in honor of the week. This guide is intended as a resource to show locals and visitors alike, all that Austin has to offer. To help differentiate between official and unofficial events, any reference to ‘official’ Austin PRIDE events include the Austin PRIDE logo in their header and use ‘PRIDE’ (in all caps). For the most up-to-date listing of official events, visit the Austin PRIDE website at www.austinpride.org.

If you don’t see an event listed, email details to info@therepubliq.com or submit your event online.

Austin PRIDE Festival

The Austin Gay & Lesbian Pride Foundation presents the 28th annual Austin Pride Festival at Edward Rendon Sr. Park at Festival Beach in Town Lake Metropolitan Park (a/k/a Fiesta Gardens) featuring entertainment, games and activities, drinks, food, family zone, and 140+ booths featuring local non-profits organizations and businesses. Fiesta Gardens (Edward Rendon Sr. Park at Festival Beach in Town Lake Metropolitan Park), 2101 Jesse E. Segovia St., Austin TX 78702. Saturday, August 10, 2019, 11 AM – 6 PM CDT. All ages. General admission: Adults $20-$150, children ages 7-17 $10, children 6 & under FREE.

Parking around Fiesta Gardens is ALWAYS an issue. Give yourself some extra time to find a spot and if you park in the surrounding neighborhood, don’t block someone’s driveway. If you plan to park downtown and then catch a ride over to the Festival, remember to feed your meter. Attendees are strongly encouraged to use alternatives: carpool, carshare services, bike or walk via the Hike and Bike Trail or use Capital Metro. Capital Metro’s #21/Exposition and #22/Chicon routes pick-up and drop-off at the stop at Holly & Robert R. Martinez, Jr. streets, 3 blocks from Fiesta Gardens. Both routes have stops in the Warehouse District and near the MetroRail’s Downtown Station and MetroRapid stops.

If the admission fee is too much for your budget, consider signing up to be a volunteer. Austin PRIDE needs about 200+ volunteers to help the festival and parade run smoothly and volunteers receive free admission to the festival.

QueerBomb 2019

Published

on

QueerBomb was born ten years ago, from the need seen by many within the LGBTQIA+ community to create a free, all-inclusive, all-ages, corporate-free, and sponsorship-free event to “celebrate each and every member of our community and encourage all to embrace the manifold ways we contribute to building a beautiful and diverse society” during the month of Stonewall.

Now, on the first Saturday in June, QueerBomb kicks off a summer of pride with an explosion of celebration starting with a rally in East Austin at Fair Market which turns in to a procession through Austin’s 6th Street Entertainment District and ends up at the after party back at Fair Market.

The Rally

QueerBomb kicks off with a rally at Fair Market. Unlike a typical pride festival, you don’t have to by a ticket and you won’t see any corporate representation. The groups represented are all local non-profit organizations and none of them were charged for their space.

Something else you won’t find at QueerBomb is a headliner or out-of-town entertainment. The rally lasts about an hour and a half and features speakers, primarily from marginalized segments of the LGBTQIA+ community: trans*, QPOC, Latinx, sex workers, etc. Previous QueerBombs have also featured local entertainers.

There is an accessible/ramp entrance in the alley directly behind Fair Market off of Waller Street for mobility impaired attendees. This ramp leads directly into the yard with a reserved space at the highest point of the yard directly at the end of the entrance ramp.

ASL interpreters are also available during the rally.

The Procession

The highlight of QueerBomb is the procession. With a typical pride parade, you have floats with spectators on the sidelines. With QueerBomb, everyone is the parade.

Once the rally is over at 8:30 PM SHARP, the crowd pours out of Fair Market on to the streets and marches down the ‘straightest’ street in Austin. The procession doesn’t close down the streets, so Austin Police will escort the procession and hold traffic at intersections until it passes. The procession heads up 6th Street before turning on Brazos, then back down 7th Street before heading back to Fair Market for the after-party. Note: While the rally and procession are all-ages, the after-party is usually 18+.

Pedicabs are available at both the front and accessible/ramp entrances for mobility impaired participants who want to take part in the procession. The pedicabbers are donating their services, so be sure to show some appreciation and thank them for their time.

Fundraisers

Just because it’s a free event, doesn’t mean that it’s free to produce. With no corporate sponsorship or tickets sales to cover the costs, QueerBomb hosts a GoFundMe campaign as well as several fundraisers leading up to the event itself to cover the $16K it costs to host the event.

The Manifesto

QueerBomb is a family of LGBTQIA individuals gathering to support our unique and collective pride. Our purpose is to provide a space to celebrate each and every member of our community and encourage all to embrace the manifold ways we contribute to building a beautiful and diverse society. We reclaim the radical, carnal and transgressive lineage of our ever-changing community in our ongoing fight for equal justice and the right to express ourselves in whatever way we see fit.

Each June, the month of Stonewall, we stand together to embrace our sexuality, bodies, personalities, art, music, literature and politics, while recapturing pride from corporate sponsorship. We strive for a pride that refuses to put rules on what you can and can’t be proud of, that says every expression, from the spirit to the flesh, is worthy.

QueerBomb does not apologize. QueerBomb does not make excuses. QueerBomb is free for all. QueerBomb stands proud, and so should you.
