Austin Pride Rescheduled Due to Hurricane Harvey

The 2017 Austin Pride festival and parade scheduled for this Saturday has been rescheduled by organizers due to inclement weather expected as Hurricane Harvey hits the Texas coast. The storm is expected to make landfall late Friday night between Corpus Christi and Port O’Connor. Areas along and east of Interstate 35 corridor – including Austin – could see cumulative rainfall amounts of 10 to 20 inches through Tuesday. Travis, Williamson and Hays counties are under a flash flood watch, starting at 1 PM on Friday. The National Weather Service also has Hays, along with Bastrop, Caldwell and Fayette counties under a tropical storm warning. The warning means damaging winds of 40 to 50 mph, with gusts of up to 60 mph, are likely in these counties.

Austin Pride posted a statement on its Facebook page:

“It with a heavy heart that we announce the Annual Festival and Parade are being rescheduled. We know how much everyone had their hearts set on tomorrow’s Celebration, however the safety and security of everyone attending and participating in PRIDE is paramount in our plans for a successful PRIDE Celebration. With that said, we are working with the City of Austin’s various departments to reschedule the PRIDE Festival and Parade. Contrary to dates that have been mentioned, no dates have been confirmed. We will of course announce the new dates as soon as they are available. As much as the track of the storm changed on a daily basis, we hoped for the best and tried to stay optimistic, however this decision wasn’t really a decision at all. When it comes to the safety and security of everyone involved, the Austin PRIDE Board and Co-Chairs take that matter very seriously. We look forward to seeing you soon! With Love, Austin PRIDE”

“PS. After speaking to the venues and other planners, the two scheduled PRIDE WEEK Events planned for tonight are still on!”

The original announcement was sent in an email to volunteers by Micah Andress, Vice President of the Austin Gay and Lesbian Pride Foundation which organizes the festival and parade:

“THANK YOU ALL for your work to come out and volunteer for Austin Pride 2017, as of today at 10 am Pride is officially rescheduled due to Hurricane Harvey. We appreciate everyones efforts dealing with weather situation. We tentatively have a date for the parade of September 16, and the Festival of October 21! Please follow us on social media for more updates. In a natural disaster this is the best we can do to make Pride SAFE for everyone! AGAIN, thank you all so very much and HAPPY PRIDE!!”

Currently, the tentative date for the rescheduled pride parade of Saturday, September 16, would be the day before Dallas’ planned pride parade on Sunday, September 17 and the tentative date for the festival on October 21 would be during the same weekend as the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. Justin Timberlake is currently scheduled to perform at the Austin360 Amphitheater at the Circuit of the Americas that evening.
