The first openly trans woman to graduate from The School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin, Paula’s practices focuses on gender and sexual minorities who often have a difficult time finding a therapist that does not pathologize their identities. As a trans and queer identified therapist, she works from a place of affirming and celebrating who we are. Fees for individual thereapy are $135 for a 50-minute session, with a limited number of sliding scale spots. Does not accept insurance but can provide receipts to facilitate insurance reimbursement as an out-of-network provider.

This group, facilitated by Ryan Dillon, LPC from Pride Counseling Austin, provides transgender & gender non-binary teenagers, 13 to 17 years old, a place to feel safe and comfortable to process their thoughts and feelings while getting support from others. The group integrates therapeutic expressive arts — paint, clay, music, movement, and more — throughout counseling, allowing participants to process their thoughts and feelings in ways beyond talking. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 6 – 7:30 PM. Cost is $30 per session.

The Travis County Law Library has info sheets and forms for Gender Identifier and/or Name Change. The info sheets provide step-by-step instructions on how to change your sex/gender identifier on Texas state records. A Law Library Reference Attorney can review your forms at the morning case review clinic (weekdays from 10 AM – 12 NOON) and can assist with understanding the forms and explaining what information goes in which blanks. They will also notarize reviewed forms for free.

If you need additional assistance with the paperwork, check out the University of Texas School of Law‘s Gender Affirmation Project (see below). They host a couple clinics each semester to help individuals through the name and gender marker change legal process.

If you cannot afford to pay the filing fee, you can file a Statement of Inability to Afford Payment of Court Costs form to ask the court to waive the fee. Also, Trans Relief Project and Trans Lifeline Microgrants offer financial assistance with to help with administrative costs associated with name and/or gender changes.

The Gender Affirmation Project, a student-run initiative of the Mithoff Pro Bono Program at the University of Texas School of Law, (formerly the Trans Name & Gender Marker Project) provides free legal assistance obtaining court-ordered name and/or gender-marker changes on basic forms of identification for residents of Travis County.

They host about two clinics during the fall and spring semesters. Complete the online survey to be notified when the next clinic is scheduled.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), also known as the International Transgender Day of Remembrance, is observed annually on November 20 as a day to memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia and to draw attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community. Austin hosted its first TDoR back in 2002 at Republic Square and for more than the past decade has held the event if front of Austin City Hall. Previous vigils had a more somber feel, honoring those lost to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice with speakers.

Gender Unbound Trans & Intersex Art Fest

Gender Unbound is a multi-discipline art festival exclusively featuring trans and intersex artists, musicians, performers, and filmmakers. The fourth annual festival was held September 22-23, 2019 in Austin at the Blue Genie Art Bazaar.

Gender Unbound Art Fest is created and hosted by Gender Portraits, a sponsored nonprofit project of Austin Creative Alliance, and is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
