Since 2014, the U.S.-Mexico border has seen a surge in the number of people seeking protection from violence and insecurity in Central America. Among these are many queer folx, particularly trans women, who have experienced threats from both private actors and even the police. Because queer folx are at particular risk, they have greater need to seek safety in the U.S.
That makes the Trump administrations attacks on asylum seekers, from indefinite detention to forcing asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their cases take years to work their way through immigration courts, most dangerous for our community. It’s time to get educated and fight back together.
Cristian Sanchez of RAICES will speak on his work with trans asylum seekers detained at GEO Group’s Pearsall facility. A RAICES client will share her story and why our action is necessary. An ACLU of Texas representative will then give national context.
We will be taking action, requesting that DHS #freeAlejandra and end indefinite detention as well as writing to RAICES clients to remind them that they are supported.
