Remember Stonewall! It’s June, the month when we commemorate the birth of our modern struggle for queer rights. Over 50 years later, we again see oppressed people attacked by police for attempting to exercise their basic human rights. As a community that is also disproportionately affected by police violence and abuse, let’s show solidarity and support for the Black Lives Matter movement and POC members of our community. We will peacefully demonstrate by walking from City Hall to the Capitol!

WHY?

This event is intended to complement and amplify the broad support that is behind the existing protests. We want to show our black and POC neighbors, and black and POC queer people that the broader community stands with them.

WHO?

We are not affiliated with any existing community groups, and for the safety of the small group of organizers, we would like to keep our names private. (Since we have now seen organizers of other peaceful demonstrations face scrutiny from the police.)

What’s the plan?

This will be a peaceful demonstration and we will not be blocking traffic. We will gather at City Hall and walk together on public sidewalks to the Capitol.
We encourage those coming to bring signs saying AFFIRMING phrases such as:
“LGBTQ Supports Black Lives”
“We Support the Protestors”
“Stop Police Violence”
“When There’s Justice, There Will Be Peace”
And other positive messages. (All are welcome regardless of course!)
We encourage you to bring water and snacks and dress boldly if you feel comfortable doing so! Be who you are and be proud!

*SAFETY NOTICE*

Although we intend for this to be peaceful and welcome to all, we also acknowledge that police have been violent toward other peaceful showings of solidarity. Please be mindful that participating in any demonstration carries risk.

We also encourage you to hold yourselves and others participating accountable by offering love and support to those who are experiencing heightened emotions. If tensions rise, de-escalate.
Please do not take photos or film people participating without asking them first. Do not tag photos without permission.

Feel free to message Austin LGBT for Black Lives if you have any questions and we will try our best to answer them.
If you would like to volunteer to help, acting as a ‘parade chauffeur,’ please message us! Also, if you can bring water, snacks or medical supplies, or are qualified to act as a medic during the protest, please message us!

Please help BLM and protestors nationwide by giving directly, showing up to other demonstrations, and signing petitions. Here are more resources for support:
