Dan Savage’s Porn Fest Hits Austin

Published

on

https://vimeo.com/72760597

Dan Savage gets dirty in Austin with his amateur porn festival at the Marchesa Theater, September 5-6, 2014 with a curated selection of his favorite shorts all played on the big screen.

Most people either know Dan Savage for his relationship and sex advice column, Savage Love, or as the co-creator of the It Gets Better Project. What many people don’t know is that back in 2005 he challenged his Pacific NW readers to create good, old-fashion homemade porn. With no limits or stipulations, the winning shorts represented the full spectrum of titillation and fetishes — straight, gay, transgender, and more all. And just like that the HUMP! Festival was born.

“We bill HUMP! as an amateur porn festival. But it’s more than that,” says Savage. “It’s rare for people to watch porn that takes them outside their comfort zones—it’s rare for people to watch porn that, if they were home alone in front of the computer, they wouldn’t choose to click on and watch. At HUMP! straight people watch gay porn, vanilla people watch kinky porn, gay people watch lesbian porn. And people laugh, they gasp, sometimes they cover their eyes. But at the end of every film people clap and cheer. It’s moving and wonderful and newcomers don’t expect it. The whole festival is a celebration of sexual diversity.”

Nearly a decade later, Savage has taken 20 shorts of his personal favorites, mixed in with some of the most popular audience picks throughout the years, and taken it on the road, creating the HUMP! Tour. A collection of hilarious, thought-provoking, artistic, sometimes sad, and often outrageous films viewed together, in an audience, on the big screen.

Make no mistake, these aren’t cinematic masterpieces. This is porn. You get that right away from the opening animated piece, Rumpy Pumpy. The animated penises, vaginas and anuses are a giveaway. There’s a little bit of something to keep everyone engaged during the 90 minute screening.

Although there are a few shorts with some high production quality, like The Beat a short about the morning ritual of a Mormon missionary (and a cute one at that) and Ouroboros a circular story about a (very hot) hook-up told in reverse order … without any of that pesky mind-numbing dialogue. Not exactly high-quality, D4U is pretty cute with its story of interspecies love.

Some shorts were artistic in their simplicity. The Perfect Stranger and Music for 2 Humans were just that. Simple casual sex. While Magic Lover used a little simple stop-action to make a otherwise boring short, cute. One of the submissions was actually thought-provoking, as Krutch reminds us that people with disabilities get off too.

There are the mockumentaries. The Legend of Gabe Harding, a documentary about a renowned (and unlikely) fluffer on a porn set. Then there’s Mythical Proportions, the mock doc about three women and their fetish for centaurs, complete with stop-motion animation using crude puppets. There are your sci-fi entries with the time-traveling, got-to-save-the-world Go Fuck Yourself or the “Shut up and take it, space whore!” from E.T. 2: Dark Territory.

There are the typical porn, like Hot ‘n Saucy Pizza Boy, that is about as cliche as you can get with the whole gay pizza delivery set up, complete with cheesy dialogue. D&D Orgy where your co-ed game of Dungeon & Dragons gets all hot and steamy … and kinky. Then there is Tuff Titties, your not-so typical garage mechanic got-your-lube-job-right-here scene.

There are the shorts where people explore their limits, like Lauren Likes Candy where a tender evening together for two women ends up with a scene involving a chain-link fence, zip ties and clothes pins. Edged is about a college boy exploring edging and discovering that his only way out is by not getting off. Then there is Fun with Fire which involves flash paper and some woman’s vajayjay.

There always are those submissions that I just categorize in the WTF. Pie Sluts is right up there with that naked, pie-in-the-face action, that I apparently don’t get. Right after that is Go Ahead, Pee!, which involves a leotard and a trampoline … I’ll just leave it at that.

If Dan Savage accomplishes anything, it will be to have gotten straight people to sit through hot gay, lesbian and trans porn and for gays to sit through some rather tame straight porn. But, either way, it will be interesting to see a new generation see porn the “old-fashioned” way … in a theater, on the big screen, with others.

The HUMP! Tour is presented in Austin at the Marchesa Theate in partnership with the Austin Chronicle on September 5 at 7:30 and 9:30 PM, and September 6 at 7, 9, and 11 PM. Tickets are $20 and available online at www.humptour.com.

Making Montgomery Clift

aGLIFF and the Austin Film Society present the Texas premiere of Robert Anderson Clift & Hillary Demmon’s documentary MAKING MONTGOMERY CLIFT.

Published

on

The All Genders, Lifestyles, and Identities Film Festival, formerly known as the Austin Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, along with the Austin Film Society, will host a screening of the Texas premiere of Robert Anderson Clift & Hillary Demmon’s documentary about the classic film star and queer icon Montgomery Clift in Austin on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar.

The iconic Hollywood actor Montgomery Clift — long described as “tragically self-destructive” and “tormented” by his sexuality — is being seen in a new light thanks in part to a documentary by his nephew Robert Clift, along with co-director Hillary Demmon. Using a a rich collection of never-before-seen footage from the family archives and exclusive audio interviews the documentary paints a much more complicated picture of the legendary actor that shows he was was unashamed of his sexuality, maintained a great sense of humor and even defied the studio system.

“I learned very early that there was a deep chasm between Monty, as remembered publicly, and Monty as remembered by family and loved ones,” says the actor’s nephew and documentary co-director Robert Clift. “This film gave me the opportunity to revisit those feelings and dig into the story behind the story. In the process, I hope that a more expansive view of my uncle’s life emerges, one that is truer to his powerful sense of integrity, creativity and intelligence.”

Interviews with family and close friends of Monty, including the personal accounts of his uncle Monty and father Brooks Clift, help paint a fresh portrait of star, complete with the actor’s passions, contributions and commitment to living and working in his own way and most importantly, one that shows that narratives made popular by previous biographies and documentaries that considered him “the slowest suicide in Hollywood history” were flawed. “The Montgomery Clift that most people know today,” says Demmon, “if they remember him at all, isn’t somebody his family and loved ones recognized. That’s a twofold loss – first of the person himself, and then of his memory.”

The Texas premiere of Making Montgomery Clift will screen at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar. Tickets are $12 (plus $1.49 service charge and $1.11 sales tax) and available on the Alamo Drafthouse website.

aGLIFF, KUTX Host Texas Premiere of JEWEL’S CATCH ONE

Published

on

The Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival announced aGLIFF’s February monthly screening, in partnership with KUTX 98.9 FM, will feature the Texas premiere of the documentary JEWEL’S CATCH ONE. Directed by C. Fitz, the documentary about the legendary disco hall Catch One in Los Angeles is also a portrait of Jewel Thais-Williams, the remarkable woman who kept Catch One alive against all odds, surviving her own crisis with drugs and alcohol in the 1980s to become an inspiring political activist, philanthropist and healer.

When the disco Catch One opened on the corner of Pico and Crenshaw in 1973, it provided a haven for the black and brown queer community in L.A., who got the cold shoulder at West Hollywood’s clubs. It was a place where “everybody was welcome,” as its indefatigable founder, Jewel explains. And the club ruled for over 40 years, despite frequent police raids, a suspected arson that closed Catch One for two years, and the AIDS crisis that felled so many of its regulars. It became the hip haunt for such celebrities as Madonna, Sandra Bernhard, Sylvester, and Sharon Stone, who was interviewed for the documentary. Paying tribute are such disco divas as Thelma Houston, Evelyn “Champagne” King and Bonnie Pointer.

JEWEL’S CATCH ONE will screen at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar on Wednesday, February 15 at 7:30 PM. The screening is open to ages 18 and up. Children 6 and up are only allowed with an adult. Tickets are available online. Jewel Thais-Williams will be in attendance.

Fire Song (TRAILER)

Published

on

In this first Canadian narrative feature film to deal with the Canadian Aboriginal community and Two-Spirited people, gay Cree/Metis filmmaker Adam Garnet Jones’s Fire Song is a thoughtful character study focused on a young gay Anishinaabe man who is at a crossroads, forced to choose between the challenges of life on a homophobic First Nation reservation and his close knit family, a secret boyfriend, and the possibilities offered by the outside world.

When a teenaged girl commits suicide in a remote Northern Ontario Aboriginal community, it’s up to her closeted brother Shane (Andrew Martin) to take care of their family. Shane was supposed to move to the city for University in the fall, and he has been trying to convince his secret boyfriend, David (Harley Legarde), to come with him, but now everything is uncertain.

Shane is torn between his responsibilities at home and the promise of freedom calling to him from the city. He pushes through barrier after barrier, determined to take care of his mom, Jackie (Jennifer Podemski), and earn money for school. But when circumstances take a turn for the worse and Shane has to choose between his family or his future, what will he do?

From the razor scars on Martin’s upper arms to the two real-life suicides that took place on the Ontario reserve while they were shooting, the film serves as a stark reminder of Aboriginal communities’ self-harm crisis. But it’s really about much more than that.

Torn between the city and the country, formal education and embracing tradition, a straight life and being true to his desires, Director Jones has rendered a character pulled in all directions at once. Fire Song resonates deeply for anyone who has felt the effect of being an outsider struggling to connect with the world.

Fire Song will be released in the U.S. via Wolfe Video on November 8, 2016 on DVD / VOD: across all digital platforms including iTunes, Vimeo On Demand, and WolfeOnDemand.com, and will be on DVD via Wolfe Video and many major retailers.
