First Splash 2016

Published

on

A quick primer for those of you new to Splash and/or Austin’s queer scene. First, there are two Splashes: First Splash during Memorial Day Weekend and Last Splash during Labor Day Weekend. First Splash is when Austin gays kick off lake season, while Last Splash is the unofficial close of the summer. For those thought it was the first weekend of May … it was once upon a time … but it was moved recently to the holiday weekend.

[gdlr_notification icon=”fa-exclamation-triangle” type=”color-background” background=”#e44a64″ color=”#ffffff”]This is an active story. Be sure to check back regularly for updates.[/gdlr_notification]

First and Last Splash are technically just the party out on the lake at the gay section of Hippie Hollow on the Sunday of the holiday weekend. The gay section is located at the very end of the park. Just keep on the paved walkway until it runs out … and you’re at the gay section. Each year, for both Splash events, the bars come together and load up a couple of barges with booze, bartenders and deejays and head out to the cove. If you want to grab drinks from the party barge, you’ll need to grab a wristband from one of the sponsor bars and at select events BEFORE heading out to the lake. Also, be sure to bring your photo ID.

There are several events that pop-up around the lake event. Splash Days, for example, is a multi-day circuit party during Last Splash and Austin Chill Weekend is a bear run organized by the Lone Star Bears that also falls over Labor Day weekend. While these Splash-adjacent events tend to focus on a specific portion of the community, the actual Splash party at the lake is open to everyone … 18 and up, just because that’s the rule at Hippie Hollow.

[gdlr_heading tag=”h3″ size=”24px” color=”#ffffff” font_weight=”bold”]No Refusal During Memorial Day Weekend [/gdlr_heading]

The Austin Police Department will conduct their ‘No Refusal’ DWI initiative from Friday, May 27 to Monday, May 30, 2016 between 9 PM and 5 AM when officers will apply for a search warrant to obtain blood from operators suspected to be impaired, who refuse to provide a breath or blood sample.

[/gdlr_styled_box]

This time last year, Lake Travis was sitting at around 30-something percent full and over 40 feet below full. Today, the lake is completely full … actually a little over full. If you boat out to Hippie Hollow, this will mean a shorter trip, depending on where you are coming in from. Without the Sometime Islands to navigate around, boaters can shoot directly for the cove.

If you haven’t heard, Hippie Hollow is a clothing optional park … actually the only clothing optional park in the state. It’s optional, so you don’t have to take your clothes off … in fact most don’t although, after a few drinks and baking under the sun, there are more nude people out later in the day. There is no cost to go the Splash party at the lake, BUT there is a fee to get in to the park. It’s $15 per vehicle if you drive in or $8 per person if you walk or bike in. Cash or check only, no credit/debit cards. There is no fee if you come in off the lake on a boat. Please note that Hippie Hollow Park generally reaches capacity on holiday weekends. When capacity is reached the park is closed for the remainder of the day to all incoming traffic, including pedestrians. So don’t be surprised if you’re turned away at the gate when you show up late in the afternoon.

If you intend to get free drinks from the party barges, you will need to get a wristband. Wristbands are available from one of the sponsor bars/businesses on Saturday night. Dispose of all trash properly in the appropriate containers. If you bring your own beverages, remember, NO GLASS containers. Tobacco is prohibited in all Travis County parks. Pets are not allowed at Hippie Hollow.

If you’re planning on driving out, try to head out early. Because of limited parking, once the lot hits capacity the park temporarily closes the park to new visitors until it clears out a bit. Also, it’s a long hike from the parking lot to the gay section at Hippie Hollow … take this in mind if you plan to be hauling in a ton of crap.

First Splash 2019

A quick primer for those of you new to Splash and/or Austin’s queer scene. First, there are TWO Splash weekends in Austin: First Splash is when Austin gays kick off summer over the Memorial Day holiday weekend and Last Splash is the unofficial close of summer during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

This is an active post and is updated. It also features a curated list of events. For a complete list of upcoming events, check out our community calendar.

What is Splash?

First and Last Splash are technically just the party out on the lake at the gay section of Hippie Hollow on the Sunday of the holiday weekend. The gay section is located at the very end of the park. Just keep on the paved walkway until it runs out … and you’re at the gay section. Each year, for both Sundays on Splash weekends, several of the bars come together and load up a couple of barges with booze, bartenders and deejays and head out to the cove. If you want to grab drinks from the party barge, you’ll need to grab a wristband from one of the sponsor bars (see below for further details) and be sure to bring your photo ID.

The Austin Police Department‘s ‘No Refusal’ DWI initiative is in place every Friday through Sunday from 9 PM and 5 AM all summer long. If you are pulled over and suspected of driving while impaired, officers will be able to apply for a search warrant to obtain blood from operators who refuse to provide a breath or blood sample.

Beyond Splash

There are several events that pop-up around the lake event. While these Splash-adjacent events tend to focus on a specific portion of the community, the actual Splash party at the lake is open to everyone … 18 and up, just because that’s the rule at Hippie Hollow.

FIRST SPLASH AT HIPPIE HOLLOW

This is the main event. This is what Splash is all about.

If you haven’t heard, Hippie Hollow is a clothing optional park … actually the only clothing optional park in the state. It’s optional, so you don’t have to take your clothes off … in fact most don’t although, after a few drinks and baking under the sun, there are more nude people out later in the day. Remember, nudity is okay, lewd behavior isn’t and will get you ticketed or arrested.

How much is it?

There is no cost to go the Splash party at the lake, BUT there is a fee to get in to the park. It’s $15 per vehicle if you drive in or $8 per person if you walk or bike in. Cash or check only, no credit/debit cards. There is no fee if you come in off the lake on a boat. Please note that Hippie Hollow Park generally reaches capacity on holiday weekends. The county closes the park for the remainder of the day to all incoming traffic, including pedestrians when capacity is reached. So don’t be surprised if you’re turned away at the gate when you show up late in the afternoon.

Wristbands

If you intend to get free drinks from the party barges, you will need to get a wristband. Wristbands are available from one of the sponsor bars/businesses on Saturday night. You will need to bring your ID and it will be put on you at the bar. No, you can’t grab a couple for your friends. Your wristband only gets you free drinks from the sponsored party barge. You do not need a wristband to go to the Splash party at the lake. Your wristbands do not get you in to the park for free. You still need to play the park entry fee if you drive or walk in.

What can I take?

Also, it’s a long hike from the parking lot to the gay section at Hippie Hollow … take this in mind if you plan to haul in a ton of crap. If you haul it in, you haul it out. Dispose of all trash properly in the appropriate containers. If you bring your own beverages, remember, NO GLASS containers. The county prohibits all tobacco products in its parks and pets are not allowed at Hippie Hollow.

After the Lake

After Splash is really up to you. Most will go home and (hopefully) shower and freshen up or nap before heading back out for a Sunday Funday on 4th Street. Many bars treat Sunday night over a holiday weekend like a second Saturday so many will not have their regularly scheduled Sunday night shows.

Austin Pride 2019

Published

on

While many celebrate pride during Pride Month in June, Austin has hosted its Pride events later in the summer since 2011. The Austin Gay & Lesbian Pride Foundation, the organizers of Austin PRIDE, announced in January that this year’s celebration will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2019,  and as in the past, you can expect  a week of events — both official and unofficial — leading up to the Austin PRIDE festival and parade.

We’ve put together our annual Austin Pride Planner to help you plan your week and get the most out of everything that is going on. This guide is an active document and will be updated regularly as new events are added to the calendar leading up to pride week. You are encouraged to bookmark this page and check back for updates.

This is an active post and is updated. It also features a curated list of events. For a complete list of upcoming events, check out our community calendar.

PRIDE vs. pride. Not all the events listed in this guide are ‘official’ Austin PRIDE events. Many ‘pride’ events have no connection to the Austin Gay & Lesbian Pride Foundation. Some are stand-alone events by allied businesses showing their support for the LGBTQ+ community and many are regular weekly/monthly events with a special pride theme in honor of the week. This guide is intended as a resource to show locals and visitors alike, all that Austin has to offer. To help differentiate between official and unofficial events, any reference to ‘official’ Austin PRIDE events include the Austin PRIDE logo in their header and use ‘PRIDE’ (in all caps). For the most up-to-date listing of official events, visit the Austin PRIDE website at www.austinpride.org.

If you don’t see an event listed, email details to info@therepubliq.com or submit your event online.

Austin PRIDE Festival

The Austin Gay & Lesbian Pride Foundation presents the 28th annual Austin Pride Festival at Edward Rendon Sr. Park at Festival Beach in Town Lake Metropolitan Park (a/k/a Fiesta Gardens) featuring entertainment, games and activities, drinks, food, family zone, and 140+ booths featuring local non-profits organizations and businesses. Fiesta Gardens (Edward Rendon Sr. Park at Festival Beach in Town Lake Metropolitan Park), 2101 Jesse E. Segovia St., Austin TX 78702. Saturday, August 10, 2019, 11 AM – 6 PM CDT. All ages. General admission: Adults $20-$150, children ages 7-17 $10, children 6 & under FREE.

Parking around Fiesta Gardens is ALWAYS an issue. Give yourself some extra time to find a spot and if you park in the surrounding neighborhood, don’t block someone’s driveway. If you plan to park downtown and then catch a ride over to the Festival, remember to feed your meter. Attendees are strongly encouraged to use alternatives: carpool, carshare services, bike or walk via the Hike and Bike Trail or use Capital Metro. Capital Metro’s #21/Exposition and #22/Chicon routes pick-up and drop-off at the stop at Holly & Robert R. Martinez, Jr. streets, 3 blocks from Fiesta Gardens. Both routes have stops in the Warehouse District and near the MetroRail’s Downtown Station and MetroRapid stops.

If the admission fee is too much for your budget, consider signing up to be a volunteer. Austin PRIDE needs about 200+ volunteers to help the festival and parade run smoothly and volunteers receive free admission to the festival.

If your organization would like to be part the of the Austin Pride Parade, you can register online. Downtown Austin. Saturday, August 10, 2019, 8 – 10 PM CDT. All ages. FREE; $35 for VIP seating.
